Why You Should be Thinking About Trees NOW

Arborist Brian talks about why Winter is the ideal time for tree care.

It's winter, and that means shorter days, the Holiday season, cold weather, and winter storms. Taking a proactive approach to your tree-care needs could save you thousands in property damage, hours in coordinating damage mitigation, and not to mention the headache of working with your Home-Owners insurance. Now is the perfect time to have an Arborist look around your property to make sure you don't have any dead or dangerous trees hanging over structures or places where you or your family frequent. It's also the best time of the year to get a deal. Without leaves, cleaning up tree-work during winter takes less man hours; which equates to less money spent by the homeowner. That big tree project you've been putting off may be in your budget now. Don't wait for storm damage to happen!

There's another reason you should be thinking about tree care in the winter though. Most of our native hardwood trees are "hibernating" right now, and so are most of the pests, diseases, and fungi that can attack fresh cuts. By the time these pests are emerging again, the tree has already begun the "healing" process and gets the benefit of Spring growth to recover from the pruning.
That isn't to say that all trees should be pruned this time of year. Certain trees, especially some of our ornamentals, will lose much of their beautiful flowers if heavily trimmed during the winter. If a tree-care company can't identify the tree they're trimming, then it may be time to call in an Arborist to make sure you aren't doing more harm than good.
